Using entirely new material which could protect double the number of drops as compared to earlier glass Corning launched Corning Gorilla Glass 6. New glass with new composition has made to bear increased compression making it safer.
The Corning Gorilla Glass 6 could withstand 15 drops from 1 meter on rough surfaces in lab tests by Corning and which bettered twice from the Corning Gorilla Glass 5.
According to recent Toluna consumer global study revealed that on an average mobile phone user drops mobile phones 7 times in a year with half of the drops were 1 meter or below.
The layer of Corning Gorilla Glass which formed the last and uppermost surface of the screen has to be very durable and slim to match with the mobile phones getting slimmer over the years.
Along with getting thinner, it has to tough, durable and scratch resistant. The billions of devices of around 45 major brands across the globe have been using Corning Gorilla Glass and the confidence has to be strengthened.
At the launch on Wednesday Dr. Jaymin Amin, vice president of technology and product development, Corning Gorilla Glass and Corning Specialty Materials said “Gorilla Glass 6 is an entirely new glass composition that can be chemically strengthened to give it significantly higher levels of compression than is possible with Gorilla Glass 5. This enables Gorilla Glass 6 to be more resistant to damage”.
The time on which we will witness the new Gorilla Glass 6 in the mobile phones is yet to be announced but possibly by the end of the year phones might appear with Gorilla Glass 6.
The company claims that products of competitors fail in the first drop while 70 percent of Corning Gorilla Glass 6 samples survive 20 drops.
