Cricket great Nasser Hussain compared an Ash Gardner catch during Australia’s five-wicket World Cup win to the iconic screamer England’s Ben Stokes took almost three years ago.

During the 2019 men’s World Cup, Stokes stunned everyone when he leapt off the ground and took a backwards one-handed catch to dismiss South Africa’s Andile Phehlukwayo.

“It’s the best catch I’ve ever seen in the flesh,” former England spinner Graeme Swann said on Twitter at the time.

Today, in Wellington, Gardner had to run backwards before leaping off the ground and latching onto the ball with one hand to dismiss Mignon du Preez.

Hussain was in awe.

“She was backtracking. She had to go one-handed,” Hussain said.

“She’s amazed herself… I was lucky enough to see that Ben Stokes catch at The Oval… that is just as good from Ash Gardner.”

South Africa posted 5-271 in their innings. Australia took less than 46 overs to chase it down, with Meg Lanning posting 135 not out.

In Australia’s innings, du Preez took an equally impressive catch to dismiss Rachael Haynes.
