Cyberpunk 2077 is a game that didn’t have the smoothest of launches. But over the past 2 years, it has seemed to find its footings. It gained a ton of traction last year, thanks to all the patchwork by the developers coinciding with the release of the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime. Moreover, Cyberpunk 2077 received NVIDIA DLSS 3, which opens the path for even better performance and visual upgrades.

On the topic of NVIDIA and Cyberpunk 2077, the developers at CD Projekt RED have just made an important announcement at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. This announcement came with a technology preview for patch tracing Cyberpunk 2077. Players can expect this update to arrive by April 11, 2023.

Path Tracing is a feature, which provide accurate sunlight simulation across the entire scene. It is a popular choice in the film and TV world, and it helps create effects that are “indistinguishable from reality”. Now, with the help of GeForce RTX GPUs and NVIDIA DLSS, this technology can now be wielded for real-time video game path tracing too.

The technology is being dubbed as Cyberpunk 2077’s Ray Tracing: Overdrive mode, and it gives players a glimpse into what Path Tracing can bring to the world of gaming. From physically correct shadows, to true to life colored lighting, Cyberpunk 2077’s Night City has never looked more prettier.

At the moment, Cyberpunk 2077 is the only title to bring Path Tracing, but soon others will be ready to follow. The games that are next in line to wield this technology are Minecraft, Portal and Quake II.
