Dan Walker has taken to Twitter to fire back at anti-monarchists, saying that King Charles, III, Prince Harry and William deserve to be “cut a little slack” following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. It comes as numerous members of the royal family have faced backlash, including Harry and his wife Meghan Markle for holding hands in Westminster Hall yesterday and King Charles III for appearing to lose his temper at a leaking pen.

In view of his 774,200 followers, the former BBC Breakfast host took aim at anti-royalists ahead of the state funeral on Monday.

Dan wrote: “Whatever your politics or stance on the monarchy can we just agree that when your mother or grandmother dies and you have to live almost every moment of your life under an intense microscope… you deserve to be cut a little slack?”

However, not all of Dan’s Twitter followers agreed with his post and took to the comments to say so.

Twitter user @honest_gardener wrote: “Nope. Cos they don’t have to do it, they choose it. (sic)

“They choose to keep being monarch, they choose for the transfer of power to be at their death and not in advance.

“None of it’s compulsory. They can abdicate or abolish themselves if they don’t like it,” they finished.

However, @uptowncurls argued: “Yeah people need to give it a rest. It’s constant.

“I think people forget they’re human and they’ve lost a much loved family member who was the centre of everything they did.

The tweet sparked a lot of attention, receiving over 600 retweets and 4,000 comments.

Dan chimed back at the social media user: “I think his grandmother may have just died Sandy. He’s probably not having the best week.”

MikeBowden replied: “Kate and Wills didn’t!, nor did anyone. Wouldn’t normally bother me, but in this case, I think it was a little disrespectful.”

Dan proved the social media user wrong as he replied with a picture of both Princess Eugenie and Zara Tindall holding their husband’s hands at Westminster Hall.

He captioned the snap: “Hi Mike. Can you explain what made them disrespectful but not these 2 couples?” as the Twitter user admitted they “hadn’t seen” the other pictures.

It comes after Dan addressed growing concern among the British public after a number of people have been arrested in recent days for staging protests at official events to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the proclamation of her successor, King Charles III.

Some, including the campaign group Liberty, have raised concerns about whether the right to protest – among people who oppose the monarchy – should be stopped.

The 5 News broadcaster took to Twitter to admit he is torn between those defending their democratic right to protest with those mourning the death of the Queen.
