Tariq Sims’ rumoured move to the Melbourne Storm is expected to become a reality, but a journey down south may not occur until next season.
Sims’ future at St George Illawarra is uncertain after the club told him late last year that he was unlikely to have his contract extended beyond 2022, and that he was free to leave before its expiry.

On the weekend, it became evident the 32-year-old’s days as a Dragon were numbered, when coach Anthony Griffin left him out of the Dragons’ season-opening clash with the Warriors.
And after Storm co-captain and Maroons star Christian Welch suffered a season-ending Achilles rupture during Melbourne’s 26-16 win over Wests Tigers, Sims was immediately linked with a move, one that could happen this season.

According to Nine rugby league reporter Danny Weidler, Sims’ future beyond this season looks destined to be in Melbourne.
“I think you will find that he’s agreed to go to the Storm next year,” Weidler revealed on Nine’s 100% Footy.
“I don’t think a contract has been signed, but in principle he’s agreed. He’s ready to make that move (to the Storm).”
Weidler said an immediate switch was unlikely due to Melbourne’s salary-cap situation.

If a move was made this season, it would likely occur later in the year, similar to what went down last year when Tevita Pangai Junior departed the Broncos for a short stint with the Panthers.

“As for this year, the Storm have only got one position on their roster, but they’ve only got about $100,000 to spend,” Weidler said.
“I think it’s going to be difficult for it to happen right now.
“I think down the track, if toward the end of the season an opportunity comes up, like Tevita Pangai Junior with the Panthers (last season), I think that could be an opportunity.
“For 2023, Sims has made his mind up and that’s where he will go. They’ve just got to sort out the finer details.
“In terms of players making switches this year, a big factor will be COVID.
“I think clubs will want to keep a fair bit of depth in their teams because they’re worried all of a sudden they could lose three or four blokes at any opportunity.”
