One hack involved paying special attention to your fridge and freezer. Caroline Solomon is a professional home organiser based in New York. She posts hacks to her 181k followers on TikTok.

Caroline included the hack in her list of eight energy saving tips for the home.

She advised: “Pack things tight in the freezer but leave space in the fridge for air flow.”

While it may seem like an over-stuffed freezer is working hard to keep all that food frozen, the opposite is true.

The more food in your freezer, the less hard it has to work to keep all the food frozen.

Frozen food helps keep other food around it frozen, too.

Opening the freezer and letting in warm air means the freezer has to work harder. However, the less space in the freezer the less warm air gets in.

Caroline shared a number of other tips, too, including keeping your curtains closed in summer.

She said: “Keep curtains closed in the summer and open in the winter.

“In the summer, 40 percent of unwanted heat comes in through the windows.”

She added: “Get into the habit of using the oven light instead of opening the oven door.

“The oven needs more energy to reheat when you open it. If it’s hot outside, run the dishwasher or washing machine early in the morning or late at night.

“This will avoid overworking the AC if you are using it.”

Plumbing and heating experts advised Britons on a hack involving a little-known button on a boiler that could save hundreds on energy bills.

They showed how to change the flow temperature on a boiler.

The HHIC (Heating and Hot Water Council) found turning down the flow temperature on a condensing boiler could save households between six and eight percent on their gas bills.

The average energy customer paying by direct debit saw bills rise from £1,277 to £1,971 per year. Eight percent of this amounts to a possible saving of £157.68.
