Explained: How and why Instagram is changing the rules for sharing video posts and what they mean for you

Instagram has announced some new rules for video posts that are uploaded on the social media platform. According to a blog post updated by Instagram, the Meta-owned instant photo-sharing service will now turn new video posts that are shorter than 15 minutes into Reels. The company was reportedly testing this new change some time ago and now has decided to make it a permanent feature in the upcoming weeks.
Why Instagram has decided on this move
As per the blog, Instagram says that the new changes are part of the company’s efforts “to offer a more immersive and full-screen experience.” Apart from this, the company is also unifying the video and Reels tabs on users’ profiles to create a consolidated section for all videos on the app. However, the blog suggests that videos that were posted before this change comes into effect will remain as videos and won’t become Reels.
How will this change affect Instagram users
The blog mentions that the change will affect users with public and private accounts differently. If a user with a public account posts a video which gets converted to a Reel, anyone on the platform can discover the Reel and use its original audio to create their Reel. However, it currently applies to Reels that are under 90 seconds long. Meanwhile, the Reels of private account holders will only be visible to their followers.
In the case of public accounts, anyone can create a Remix with their Reels, however, private account holders can prevent other users from remixing their Reels. This change might disappoint some users as it is likely to pose some challenges. For instance, users might even find it difficult to post a horizontal video if it gets uploaded into a vertical Reels format.
Other Reels-related changes coming to Instagram
Apart from this change, Instagram has also announced adding new ways for users to create and share Reels. The blog states that the Meta-owned platform is also planning to debut a new “dual” feature that will allow users to record content and their reaction, simultaneously. Both front and back cameras of a device will be able to record videos at the same time to share “another perspective using the Dual feature in the Instagram camera,” the blog suggests.
Moreover, the social media platform is also launching updates for its “Template” feature for Reels. Instagram users who want to create their Reels will be allowed to upload both videos and photos after browsing and choosing from a variety of templates that will be available upon opening the Reels camera. The initial rollout of templates was reportedly launched by the company last month which offered users the ability to create their Reels using this format and audio from another existing Reel.
Enhanced Remix features to promote collaboration on Instagram
The updated blog also mentions that Instagram is expanding its tools for Remix to help improve the way users tell their stories on Instagram while collaborating with their favourite creators and friends. The social media platform will soon allow users to remix public photos that might help them to create their unique Reel.
Moreover, Instagram users will also be allowed to add video commentary to existing reels. Users can choose between a green screen, horizontal or vertical split-screen, or a picture-in-picture reaction view for including their video commentary.
Apart from this, the company will now allow users to add their remix clip after the original one for them to play sequentially. This will reduce the chances of a remix appearing at the same time as the original one.
