EA has shown off the first bit of footage for the next title in the ever-popular football simulation series, FIFA.

This came in the form of a new trailer that, though mostly presented in a cinematic format, did give players the first look at FIFA 23 gameplay, and went over some of the game’s new and modernized aspects. Check it out below.

One of the most tangible bits of uninterrupted gameplay comes just after the one-minute mark, we can see a new information HUD that appears before a free-kick, offering the play information on expected goal probability and the distance to the goal. Furthermore, you appear to be able to select how you want to take your shot, with additional text on the HUD reading “Inside Foot Curled.”

The trailer, as well as the official FIFA 23 website, went over the previously unveiled HyperMotion2 technology which, according to EA, applies double the amount of real match data to the game’s animations in order to make them more realistic. The game also touts its cross-play, stating that you can play with people on different platforms, however, of the same generation, meaning a PS5 owner cannot play with players on PS4 or Xbox One. They also specify that “modes that pair players together such as Pro Clubs will not feature cross-play at this time.”

More gameplay features include a “new risk versus reward shooting mechanic,” and “refreshed free kicks, penalties and corners.” The game also emphasizes the importance of the addition of women’s club football. For the first time in the FIFA game series, you can play women’s club teams, such as those in the Women’s Super League and Division 1 Féminine.

The game’s website also features a roadmap of when they’ll reveal more about the game’s various modes and features, the standouts being gameplay and HyperMotion2 on July 27, Career mode on August 1, and FIFA Ultimate Team on August 11.

As stated by EA themselves in a press release, FIFA 23 is planned to be their “most expansive [FIFA] game ever.” They stated that they are “committed to ensuring the next FIFA is our best ever, with more features, game modes, World Cup content, clubs, leagues, competitions, and players than any FIFA title before.” This came off the back of the announcement that the series would be dropping the FIFA license after this year, and will be titled EA SPORTS FC moving forward.

This was reportedly due to conflicts regarding licensing agreements. This does not hurt EA too much as it does not affect the licenses for the various local and regional leagues around the world and their players. It’s however not surprising why EA is putting so much emphasis on the scope of this FIFA game, as FIFA announced that they would continue making games with the brand. They are reportedly in talks with unnamed publishers and studios, and Gianni Infantino, FIFA president, said, in part, that “The FIFA name is the only global, original title. FIFA 23, FIFA 24, FIFA 25 and FIFA 26, and so on – the constant is the FIFA name and it will remain forever and remain THE BEST.”

FIFA 23 releases on September 30, 2022, for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC.
