Football legend David Beckham has reportedly been forced to leave a hotel in Qatar, worth an eye-watering $36,000 per night to stay at.

The 47-year-old former England captain is employed by the host nation to promote the FIFA World Cup, as well as wider tourism in the gulf country.

It’s a lucrative assignment – reportedly being paid $17 million for the World Cup period alone – but one that has attracted plenty of criticism.

Beckham has paraded as an icon to the gay community for two decades, but homosexuality is illegal in Qatar and punishable by prison, or death if you are Muslim.

The sporting icon was booked into the Mandarin Oriental in Doha according to multiple reports, where he had been staying in the Baraha View suite – for which guests pay an exorbitant price.

But the Mail Online reports that last week fans became aware of where Beckham was staying, making it potentially unsafe for him, and forcing him to discreetly switch hotels.

It’s not suggested Beckham had a run-in with any fans during his stay.
