The demand for PCs and tablets has slowed down for many factors including — pandemic, war and inflation among others. Now, a new report suggests that the global PC shipments are going to take a hit this year due to the economic slowdown. According to a report by International Data Corporation (IDC), global shipments of PCs will fall 8.2% YoY in 2022 to 321.2 million units. Moreover, the report also suggests that the worldwide demand for tablets is also expected to go down by 6.2% which will bring it down to 158 million units.
How will it affect the market
The report has mentioned that PC shipments are expected to remain well above pre-pandemic levels. Meanwhile, the report also suggests that shipments are likely to return to positive annual growth in 2023 and beyond, but it will result in a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -0.6%. On the other hand, tablets will face a bigger downfall over the same period as competition from PCs and smartphones is expected to keep the growth down, which will ultimately lead to a -2.0% CAGR.
Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC, said that supply shortages have plagued the industry for a while and the recent lockdowns in China continue to increase the issue. Factories are struggling to receive new components from upstream suppliers whereas they are also facing issues downstream while shipping finished goods. Worker sentiment within the supply chain remains unknown as the restrictions are expected to ease soon. Moreover, delivery backlogs are also likely to persist for the rest of the year.
Another IDC executive Ryan Reith has mentioned that their research continues to show strong demand and supply activity aimed at the commercial PC market, but the consumer and education markets are seeing increasing concerns which might be the cause for decreasing orders. However, Reith has also said that the recent forecast was important for multiple reasons and the uncertainty still remains high.
