Steps to free up storage space using Google Photos
- Open the Google Photos app on your Android smartphone and sign in, If prompted
- Tap the three horizontal lines in the top-left corner of the app to open the menu.
- Select “Settings” from the menu.
- Select “Back up & sync” from the list of settings.
- Turn on the “Back up & sync” toggle to start backing up your photos and videos to the cloud.
You can also choose the quality of the photos and videos you want to back up. High-quality photos and videos will be compressed, while original-quality photos and videos will count against your Google Drive storage quota.
Once your photos and videos are backed up to the cloud, you can free up storage space on your device by deleting them from your local storage.

In the Google Photos app, head to Settings and tap on Free up device storage. Tapping on this will automatically remove photos and videos that have been backed up by Google Photos.
