After months of leaks and weeks of beta testing, the redesigned Android Auto is now rolling out to all users. The redesign was first previewed at Google I/O 2022 and Google says that the design updates and feature improvements will give drivers “a more personal, easy-to-use experience from behind the wheel.”
“It’s that time of year where the industry comes together to reveal their latest projects, including what’s new in car technology. This year, we are returning to CES to showcase new features and updates that help you make the most of your drive, and keep you connected while on the road,” Google said in a blog post.

Android Auto allows users to connect their Android phones to their car’s display and enable them to use apps such Maps (for navigation), YouTube Music (for audio), WhatsApp, and Phone, among others without using their smartphones.

Google says it is prioritising three important goals for drivers: navigation, communication and playing music or podcasts.
Maps is now closer to the driver’s seat for easy visibility. There is a card-based design in line with the company’s Material You scheme. The media card shows album art and there is a quick launcher to quickly access recently-used apps.
As per Google, Android Auto is compatible with all major car makers and the split screen layout is also adaptable to different screen sizes.

New capabilities for Android Auto
In addition to the new design, Google has also added some more features to easily “complete some of your most frequent needs in the car.”
The first of those features is Google Assistant capabilities. The virtual smart assistant will now provide smart suggestions, including missed call reminders, quick arrival time sharing and instant access to music or podcasts.
The new design also offers on-screen shortcuts aimed at speeding up message replies and calling favourite contacts.
The third is a seekable progress bar for music and podcasts. Probably one of the most needed and “requested” features, the seekable progress bar will allow users to skip ahead in a song or episode.
The fourth feature is WhatsApp calling. Users with the latest Pixel and Samsung smartphones can soon make calls using WhatsApp with Android Auto.
