Pharma Bro (2021)

Remember Martin Shkreli, the most hated man in America who raised the price of AIDS medication by 5,500% overnight and became known as the “pharma bro”? Documentary filmmaker Brent Hodge sure does, and he set out to understand the bizarre public figure by doing something a little weird himself. He moved into Shkreli’s apartment building to get close to and document the man.

Hodge is no stranger to larger-than-life characters, having made his mark with a documentary on Bronies, the adult male superfans of My Little Pony. Here, he looks to a darker figure. But is Martin Shkreli the problem or a symptom of the problem? That’s what Pharma Bro asks us to consider.

A German scientist has the chance to get research funds for her studies, but there’s a catch in this offbeat sci-fi rom-com. Alma must first participate in an odd experiment that will see her living with a humanoid robot for three weeks. Tom’s artificial intelligence allows him to be Alma’s ideal life partner. He is designed to make her — her specifically — perfectly happy. I’m Your Man is one of the best new streaming movies to check out this week on Hulu.

The Eternals have lived among us for thousands of years. A race of superpowered beings designed to ensure the continuation of the god-like Celestials, they watch over Earth, protecting it from a race of aliens known as Deviants. As characters within the MCU, though, they are forbidden from otherwise interfering in human affairs, explaining their absence from major battles involving the Avengers and the fate of the world.

The ten heroes are now questioning their place in the world and facing new threats to humanity and their core purpose. Chloé Zhao directs this ambitious entry in the MCU, which you can now stream on Disney Plus.

Among 2021’s best films, Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel is available to stream on HBO Max. Shot from a screenplay by Nicole Holofcener, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon, The Last Duel tells the story of a years-long feud between former friends: a knight and a squire in 14th-century France. Their petty rivalry reaches a breaking point when the knight’s wife accuses the squire of raping her. The story is told, in turn, from the three characters’ perspectives, revealing the ways men twist reality to fit their needs and stoke their egos, while women’s own experiences are weaponized in service to everything but justice.

Fans of the Hotel Transylvania films may be sad that this one won’t hit theaters, but the latest film will be available on Amazon Prime Video around the globe on January 14. In this latest title, Van Helsing’s “Monsterification Ray” goes wrong, turning Drac and his monster friends human, while Johnny, in turn, becomes a monster. Now, they have to work together, adjusting to their new mismatched bodies, to find a cure before it’s too late.

Something wicked this way comes. Joel Coen (of the Coen brothers) directs this brand new adaptation of William Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy, Macbeth, which is available on Apple TV Plus. With haunting performances by Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, respectively, this one already has lots of awards buzz and is not to be missed by fans of the Bard.

Love it or hate it, Twilight was a massive phenomenon when it came out in 2008, and it got more than a little bit of undeserved scorn at the time. Doesn’t entertainment aimed at teen girls always get dunked on a little harder? Looking back, there’s a lot to admire in this teen vampire love story, and it may even be one of the best streaming movies to check out when it hits Peacock on January 16.

Catherine Hardwicke’s direction is sharp and original, telling the story of Bella Swan, who finds herself falling for her mysterious, brooding classmate Edward Cullen. But is there more to Edward than meets the eye?

The Lost Daughter (2021)

Netflix — December 17

Maggie Gyllenhaal makes her directorial debut with this beautiful and heartbreaking portrait of a woman living in the shadow of her decisions as a mother. Leda, a middle-aged, divorced English professor, becomes fixated on two fellow travelers during a solo vacation in Greece. As she watches and interacts with the women and their children, she remembers her own daughters and a past choice to abandon her family, along with what that has cost her.

This drama, which is getting Oscar buzz, launched on Netflix in December and is still one of the best new streaming movies to watch this week.

The Matrix Resurrections (2021)

HBO Max — December 22

An odd sequel, no doubt, The Matrix Resurrections effectively makes an argument against its own existence, taking on Hollywood’s obsession with franchises even as it adds its own fresh spin on a film series launched over two decades ago.

Neo has been plugged back in and convinced that his memories of the familiar Matrix trilogy are, in fact, part of his creations as a video game developer. From there, the film weaves in old and new elements to expand on the themes of the original films and give us a radically self-aware treatise on storytelling under capitalism.

It’s naturally a polarizing entry in The Matrix franchise. Still, if you’re in on the joke, it’s a truly electrifying sequel, and Warner Bros. has made it available to stream on HBO Max for a month during its theatrical run.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

Netflix — January 1

It’s a crime that Sony didn’t greenlight the planned sequels to David Fincher’s terrific adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s celebrated Millenium novels, one of the best new streaming movies worth checking out as it becomes available on Netflix. Swedish reporter Mikael Blomkvist teams up with hacker Lisbeth Salander when a wealthy industrialist hires him to investigate a 40-year-old disappearance in this gritty neo-noir thriller starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara.

Devil in a Blue Dress (1995)

Paramount Plus and Hulu — January 1

It’s a mystery why no one has tried to adapt Walter Mosley’s best-selling Easy Rawlins mystery novels since 1995’s Devil in a Blue Dress. With terrific performances by Denzel Washington, Jennifer Beals, Don Cheadle, and more, the film stands as proof that Mosley’s writing works incredibly well onscreen.

When Easy Rawlins, recently laid off and strapped for cash, is enlisted to help find a missing woman in 1940s LA, he gets mixed up in a criminal underworld of crooked politicians, racist cops, and violent kidnappers.

Three Days of the Condor (1975)

Paramount Plus and Hulu — January 1

A CIA researcher goes on the run when his bureau is targeted by killers with suspicious links to his own employers. This classic cat-and-mouse thriller features stellar performances by Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway as unlikely allies in way over their heads.

It’s one of the best new streaming movies to watch this week for any fan of the spy genre, and you can watch it on both Hulu and Paramount Plus.

Gamer (2009)

Peacock — January 1

A critical and commercial failure, 2009’s Gamer is way overdue to be rediscovered and given its well-deserved appreciation. Now’s a perfect time, as the sci-fi actioner from the directors of Crank has dropped on Peacock, where you can watch it for free (or without ads if you sign up for a paid subscription).

The film follows John “Kable” Tillman, a man on death row fighting for his freedom as a human avatar in a massively popular online game where inmates can win their freedom — or die trying. The film is a totally unhinged and hyperactive look at our online lives and where we might end up if we let tech billionaires have their way.

Scream (1996)

Peacock — January 1

This is a perfect time to revisit horror classic Scream, just as the latest entry in the iconic franchise is hitting theatres. Re-launching the slasher genre in the 90s, Wes Craven’s Scream is both a loving homage and a blast of energy into a genre losing some of its luster in the public eye.

It follows teen Sidney Prescott and her friends trying to evade the mysterious Ghostface killer. The twist is that the characters (killers and victims alike) are hyperaware of the rules of horror films, using them to wink to the audience and scrounge up some fresh scares. If you like Scream, you can also check out Scream 2 on Peacock.

Super Troopers (2001)

Amazon Prime Video — January 1

A comedy classic that’s sure to get you laughing, Super Troopers is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The film follows a group of Vermont state troopers with a knack for slacking off, pranking, and hazing each other and generally doing a terrible job of policing.

They have to get serious — or as close as they can get — when a jurisdiction war puts them at odds with rival law enforcement. If they can get it together to solve a murder tied to a marijuana smuggling operation on their own, they’ll be able to prove themselves and keep their beloved station open.

The Tender Bar (2022)

Amazon Prime Video — January 7

Directed by Academy Award-winner George Clooney and starring fellow Oscar winner Ben Affleck, The Tender Bar is a coming-of-age drama based on J. R. Moehringer’s memoir of the same name.

It sees a young J. R. growing up on Long Island with his eccentric family. Coping with the disappointment of an absentee father, he forms a bond with his supportive — if unconventional — uncle Charlie and the patrons of the bar he runs.
