In 2022, Netflix saw a diverse range of films and series rise to the top of the platform. Shows such as Stranger Things and All of Us Are Dead proved to be extremely popular with Indians, much like they were abroad. However, when it comes to films, it was mostly Indian productions, particularly from Bollywood, that dominated the charts.

The top ten lists come from FlixPatrol, which provides charts for streaming services. Let’s take a look at the top ten films watched on Netflix in India in 2022:

  1. Sooryavanshi
  2. RRR
  3. Gangubai Kathiawadi
  4. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2
  5. Beast
  6. Darlings
  7. Badhaai Do
  8. 83
  9. Shyam Singha Roy
  10. Jaadugar

Sooryavanshi came out in November 2021, and the film started streaming on Netflix in December of the same year. It is the fourth instalment of director Rohit Shetty’s Cop Universe and stars Katrina Kaif and Akshay Kumar as ATS Chief DCP Veer Sooryavanshi. The film also features appearances by Ajay Devgn as Singham and Ranveer Singh as Simmba. Despite getting mixed reviews from critics, it is no surprise that Sooryavanshi is the most-watched film on Netflix, as it was the highest grossing Hindi film of 2021, earning nearly 300 crores at the box office.

RRR is the most expensive Indian film created and has been a massive hit not only in India, but also abroad. It broke the record for the highest opening-day collection earned by an Indian film with 240 crore rupees on the first day. It also became the highest-earning Indian film in Japan and received several nominations in the international awards circuit such as the Golden Globes, Saturn Awards, and New York’s National Board of Review.

Other than that, the list is populated by films that were already a hit in Indian cinemas. The sole exception is Darlings, which is a Netflix original starring Alia Bhatt.

Top Netflix series watched by Indians in 2022

When coming to TV series, it becomes clear that Indians prefer foreign series more than films, at least on Netflix. And not just English series even, as three of the top ten are Korean shows, which is a testament to K-drama’s popularity in the country. What’s more interesting is the fact that the entire list consists of Netflix originals as opposed to the top ten films list which only had one original film. Take a look at the list:

  1. All of Us Are Dead
  2. Stranger Things
  3. Business Proposal
  4. Money Heist
  5. Manifest
  6. Squid Game
  7. She
  8. Mismatched
  9. Jamtara – Sabka Number Ayega
  10. Bridgerton

All of Us Are Dead is a zombie apocalypse horror show that came out on January 28, 2022. It became a massive hit, following in the footsteps of Squid Game, with series gaining over 474.26 million watch time hours in its first 30 days on Netflix.

Stranger Things is no surprise as it was massively popular all around the world, but Indian audiences really loved watching Business Proposal, which is a romantic comedy K-drama. Money Heist and Squid Game from 2021 stayed favourites for binge-watchers in the country, with Netflix original Indian shows such as She and Jamtara also making the list.
