How Apple’s Continuity Camera feature may solve one of the biggest ‘webcam’ issues

In today’s world, webcams have become as essential a computer accessory as a keyboard and mouse. In today’s world, webcams have become as essential a computer accessory as a keyboard and mouse. People today are using webcams on their laptops to conduct meetings, collaborate and work on projects together in real-time. But, one of the biggest problem has always been the poor quality of the webcams including MacBook laptops.
While Apple is solving that with the new M2 MacBooks by offering a 1080p webcam setup, it has introduced an alternate solution — Continuity Camera — for those still on older Macs by allowing them to use their iPhone as a webcam.
Use your iPhone as webcam
Apple, at the keynote, also showcased a mounting clip that will allow users to mount their iPhone on Mac and use it as a webcam. In addition to that, the keynote also showcased the phone’s ability to somehow project a desk view without moving the camera. We wonder how that’s going to work. Our best guess is to use the wide-angle lens. We will test it once the operating system arrives later this year.
Third-party apps have been there which allowed users to use their phones (most Android) as webcams. But, getting that to work is a cumbersome process.
While using the iPhone as a webcam, users will also be able to use iPhone camera functions such as centerstage, studio light and a newly added feature that brightens the face and darkens the background.
Users will be able to use the iPhone as a webcam with FaceTime and other apps like Zoom.
Continuity Camera is another feature that Apple has introduced across the platform. The feature is a part of Apple’s entire Continuity suite and it allows users to seamlessly jump between devices while on a FaceTime call. What this means is that users can move their FaceTime call from their iPhone to Mac without hanging up the call.
