Google Chrome might soon help push users to choose stronger passwords with an upcoming indicator that will show their password’s strengths. According to a report by 9to5Google, the company is developing a new feature for Google Chrome that will indicate the strength of a password created by a user “directly within the browser.” The feature has existed for some time and it is available via browser extensions that are offered by multiple password managers like — LastPass, 1Password and Dashlane among others. Meanwhile, Google is planning to include the feature directly into the Chrome browser.

As per the report, Google Chrome’s “password strength indicator” feature was spotted in the latest Chrome builds as a flag. The report also mentions that when this feature receives a wider rollout, it is expected to be available for multiple platforms including — Windows, Mac, Linux, ChromeOS and others. Moreover, Google might enable this feature for users either when they are creating a new password for an account or while changing an old password, but the feature is unlikely to work while logging into an existing account, the report adds.
Considering the importance of using a proper password manager with strong passwords, in reality, most users just stick to the features that are already built into their browser, the report suggests. Google indicating the strength of a password directly through the browser might help more users to realise that “their name and birthday aren’t as secure as they think it is,” the report claims.
How Google is planning to make passwords a thing of past
The report states that Google is planning to eliminate passwords as a whole. The company is developing “passkeys,” with the help of other major players including — Microsoft and Apple. These passkeys are a “passwordless solution” for authentication measures that use “biometrics and other methods to eliminate the password.” Google detailed the progress of its efforts toward developing passkeys earlier in 2022.
Moreover, the report suggests that “another commit to Chromium” was spotted indicating the company’s plans to add a “Manage passkeys” button to the Chrome browser. This upcoming button will help users to see and delete passkeys saved on their computer and the button might also be integrated into the Settings app on Windows.
