In the absence of shooting, which had contributed 16 out of 66 medals in 2018, how will the other sports step up? Can India touch the 50-medal mark? While it is hard to predict, historically four sports — boxing, wrestling, weightlifting and badminton — have contributed majority of India’s medals at the Commonwealth Games (CWG). Here’s how these sports stack up at the 2022 CWG starting today in :

BADMINTON MEDALS EXPECTED:5

India is expected to dominate the sport and win multiple gold medals. PV Sindhu starts as the overwhelming favourite in women’s singles while India has a real chance to win gold in the mixed team. In the men’s singles, Kidambi Srikkanth and Lakshya Sen are expected to give some excellent performances. The doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, silver medallists in 2018, will be pushing for the top spot in 2022.

WEIGHTLIFTING MEDALS EXPECTED: 8-9

Both Mirabai Chanu and Jeremy Lalrinnunga are expected to win gold. Chanu is the runaway favourite in 49kg, but can she better her own Tokyo mark in the clean and jerk (115kg)? For Jeremy, this could be a major stepping stone after his Youth Olympics triumph 2018.

BOXING MEDALS EXPECTED: 7

It is redemption time for the sport after a poor showing in Tokyo with only Lovlina Borgohain winning a bronze medal. In Birmingham, Nikhat Zareen will look to continue with her good form and win a gold while Amit Phangal is expected to get back to winning ways after a disappointing Olympics. Lovlina too is in good shape, the coach controversy notwithstanding, and some of the young boxers like Sumit Kundu could punch above their weight for India.

WRESTLING MEDALS EXPECTED: 7-8

It is one sport where India has done very well in most multi-discipline events and Tokyo Olympics was no different. While Ravi Dahiya and Bajrang Punia won medals, Deepak Punia came within 10 seconds of winning a bronze. Vinesh Phogat, who wasn’t up to her own standards in Tokyo, will want to prove a point in Birmingham. This is one contingent which could give India the maximum number of medals including three gold.

TOTAL MEDALS EXPECTED: 40
