Intel to bring Wi-Fi 7 to market: Timeline and what you need to know

Intel plans to introduce Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) to the market with the new consumer devices in 2024, reports ITNews. The Wi-Fi 7 – the newest standard in the wireless industry, is said to be twice as fast as the current-gen Wi-Fi 6e, which is yet to be adopted widely. But, Intel wants to be ahead in the game.
“We are currently developing Intel’s Wi-Fi’ 802.11be’ in order to obtain the ‘Wi-Fi Alliance’ certification, and it will be installed in PC products such as laptops by 2024. “We expect it to appear in major markets in 2025,” Eric McLaughlin, vice president of Intel’s wireless solutions division, said at a recent press conference in Asia.
The Wi-Fi 7 will first be coming to laptops, and by the end of 2024, it will be available on every PC product coming out that year. McLaughlin added, “We expect it to appear in major markets in 2025.”
What is Wi-Fi 7?
McLaughlin says that Wi-Fi 7 802.11be doubles the bandwidth of 802.11ax (which has a bandwidth of 170MHz) to 340MHz while also doubling the speed. Further, Wi-Fi 7 is also known as “802.11be Extremely High Throughput.” Furthermore, the Wi-Fi 7 is also expected to have reduced latency compared to current-gen standards.
The Wi-Fi 7 will be backward compatible, meaning that users will not have any problems using the new Wi-Fi 7 router with a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 5 device or vice versa.
Intel expects that the applications of Wi-Fi 7 will expand to high-end games, virtual reality, augmented reality, and even robots. Meanwhile, others, including Qualcomm, Broadcom, and MediaTek, are also developing products compatible with Wi-Fi 7, and Intel plans to partner with other companies to help them with Wi-Fi 7 technology.
