Apple has released the release candidate version of iOS 16.2 to developers; while it includes several changes and new features, one of the biggest changes to come is for AirDrop, which alters the way it works.
With iOS 16.2, Apple limits the ‘Everyone’ option for the AirDrop, restricting it to only 10 minutes once turned on.
The 10-minute limit comes a few weeks after it was reportedly introduced for iPhone users in China. It was reported that protestors in China were using Airdrop to spread anti-government images to the public.
iPhones, iPads, and Macs come with AirDrop set to “Contacts only” by default, and there are two other options – either turn it off with “Receiving off” or “Everyone.” The ‘Everyone’ option in the AirDrop, if turned on, lets the user receive files from anyone, and since there is no time limit on the option remains active until turned off.
10-minute ‘Everyone’ AirDrop limit to come in next few weeks
Once iOS 16.2 is released publicly, in the coming weeks, the ‘Everyone’ option within AirDrop will be changed to ‘Everyone for 10 minutes,’ as seen in the latest release candidate update. The change seems to be coming for iPhones for now, but it may soon arrive on iPads and Macs, also.
If ‘Everyone for 10 minutes’ is selected, the AirDrop receiving will turn off after 10 minutes and switch back to ‘Contacts only,’ only allowed to receive photos, videos, or files from the contacts.
While Apple’s decision may or may not have tweaked the AirDrop to appease the Chinese government, the “AirDrop spam” could be another reason why Apple could have decided to expand the ‘10 minute’ limit to everyone. There have been numerous incidents where people used AirDrop to spread pornography and false threats.
