Justin Langer future remains in question despite successful Test series

Australia men’s cricket coach Justin Langer says he’s looking forward to talks of a contract extension – despite rumours he may leave his post.

“I’m never edgy,” he said on SEN about his situation.

“Before the World Cup and before the Ashes, we’ve never ever been better prepared. So it’s not a coincidence I don’t think that we’ve had the success that we’ve had.

“Whatever happens from now on, we can all be incredibly proud of this little period. We had two missions: To win the World Cup and to win the Ashes.”

Langer was appointed head coach in 2018 following the ball tampering scandal which led to the resignation of Darren Lehmann.

The former coach last week urged his old teammate to walk away.

“If I was him I’d walk away actually. Four years, out on a high. Perfect,” Lehmann said.

“I coached for a year too long and in that moment I didn’t realise it. I think four years is a perfect tenure. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.”

Talk of a contract extension was put on hold until after the Ashes series, which Australia won 4-0.

Langer said that that was always the plan.

“People don’t seem to believe this, but the absolute truth is before the World Cup and the Ashes, we all committed to the end of the Ashes to sit down and have some conversations.

“We all said that we’d sit down after the Ashes. So in the next little bit, I’m sure those conversations will start to be had.”

Langer said the past four years had been tough – but that the recent success in both white ball and red ball cricket had vindicated his tenure.

“To do that in such a short period is a monumental effort and we’re all really satisfied with that, we’re all really happy about that, we’re all really, really proud of that,” he said.

“I sit here at the moment feeling really content with the last two series.”

Langer said in December that he was hopeful his stay at the helm would be extended.
