Despite a disappointing conclusion to the race in Singapore, Hamilton has closed the gap on his team-mate George Russell in the Drivers’ Championship to 33 points with five races remaining.
However, Mercedes are still waiting for their first victory of the season and are on course to record their worst points finish since the 2013 season.
The Silver Arrows also saw their chances of finishing second in the Constructors’ standings take a huge blow as Ferrari extended the gap to 66 points after Charles Leclerc and Sainz finished second and third respectively.
