Lisa Marie Presley said ‘nothing takes away the pain’ in moving essay about grief over son | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV
In a bid to help others struggling with loss, she wrote a piece for National Grief Awareness Day, reflecting on Benjamin Keough’s suicide in July, 2020.
The 54-year-old musician said: “I can understand why people may want to avoid you once a terrible tragedy has struck. Especially a parent losing their child…
“I knew parents who lost their child and while I could be there for them when it happened, I avoided them after…because they quite literally became a representative of my biggest fear.
“I also low-key judged them, and I swore I’d never do whatever it was that I felt they either did or neglected in their parental actions and choices.”
Benjamin was just 27 when he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
His father is Lisa Marie’s first husband Danny Keough, who she married in 1988 and divorced in 1994. She also wed pop star Michael Jackson, actor Nicolas Cage and guitarist Michael Lockwood.
Lisa Marie added: “Nothing, absolutely nothing takes away the pain, but finding support can sometimes help you feel a bit less alone. Your old ‘friends’ and even family can and will run for the hills [as] you are forced into this horrendous ‘club’…
“I’ve had more than anyone’s fair share of [grief] in my lifetime and, somehow, I’ve made it this far.”
Just days before her death, Lisa Marie paid a visit to Graceland, once Elvis’s mansion and estate in Memphis, Tennessee, to mark what would have been his 88th birthday on January 8.
