In a recent interview, Malaika Arora opened up about her formative years. She spoke of how her childhood was wonderful, but she also went through tough times very early in life.

Today, Malaika is known pan-India for her successful career while she also raises her 19 year old son, Arhaan Khan. The actress revealed that she learnt to live life on her own terms very early on.

In a recent interview with a fashion magazine, the actress recalled how she was only 11 when her parents, Joyce Polycarp and Anil Arora, had a divorce. After this, Malaika and her sister Amrita, who was 6 years old, were primarily taken care of by the mother. Her mother moved from Thane to Chembur with the two daughters.

Talking about her childhood, Malaika revealed, “I had a wonderful childhood, but it wasn’t easy. In fact, in retrospect, the word I would use to describe it is tumultuous. But tough times teach you important lessons too.”

The actress also believes her fundamentals in life keep her in good shape. She also added, “My parents’ separation allowed me to observe my mother through a new and unique lens. I learned a rock-steady work ethic and the value of getting up each morning to do whatever it takes to become fiercely independent. Those early lessons are the cornerstones of my life and professional journey. I am still fiercely independent; I value my freedom and live life on my terms.”

The actress shares a close bond with her son and believes herself to be a strict yet fun and chilled-out mother. She doesn’t keep track of his every move, but she believes her son can open up to her about anything and everything.
