Man City news: Ilkay Gundogan fires warning to Liverpool after Tottenham ignite title race | Football | Sport

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has warned Liverpool after the Premier League title race was reignited by Tottenham’s stunning victory at the Etihad. The Reds are presumed to be the only team who can prevent Pep Guardiola’s side winning the league title this campaign, and their chances of doing so were significantly boosted by Harry Kane’s superb display on Saturday evening.

Despite a vast gulf in possession, Spurs put City under pressure from the word go when Dejan Kulusevski netted his first goal for the club inside four minutes.

Gundogan then drew the Sky Blues level, before the masterful Kane finished off a flowing Tottenham move to restore their lead.

A Cristian Romero handball was punished in injury time by referee Anthony Taylor, and Riyad Mahrez converted the resulting penalty to tie things up at 2-2.

And just as City threatened to go on and win the game, Kane popped up again in the 95th minute to spark bedlam, both in the dugout and the away end.

After the final whistle, Gundogan said: “It’s not a situation that we’re not used to.

“We know from recent years that Liverpool are always contenders. They’re always up there.

“We know they’ll try everything to make our lives as difficult as possible.

“The good thing is that they still need to come here to the Etihad, but there are still many games to go.”

DON’T MISS

Liverpool were dealt their own scare on Saturday when Norwich took a shock lead at Anfield.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s men rallied to produce a 3-1 victory, narrowing the gap between them and City to six points, and the Reds have the luxury of a game in hand.

Fans of both sides will have already set aside plans for when Liverpool come to the Etihad on April 9 – a fixture which could ultimately decide the fate of the Premier League title.

Despite City’s buffer at the top of the table taking an almighty blow, Guardiola gave a frank and objective rundown of events at full-time.

“It was a good game,” he said, “We tried through many sides, especially down the left. It is very difficult, they defend so narrow.

“Tottenham have a lot of quality, they give the ball to Harry Kane. They are really good up front.

“In the first half they have the goal and no more. In the second half they have one attack with Harry Kane at the start and they score.

“We try to score but we conceded the goal in extra-time.”
