At the Computex 2019 event in Taipei, MediaTek has announced its first integrated 5G SoC for high-end smartphones. This chip will be powered by the ARM’s latest Cortex-A77 CPU and Mali-G77 GPU. The company is yet to announce a name to its latest chip, however, they will be testing this chip in the third quarter of this year. The Taiwanese company mentioned that this chip will be integrated into the smartphones coming in 2020.

MediaTek has been known to making chips for the mid-range smartphones and AI-powered speakers like that of Amazon’s Echo unit. While on the other hand, Qualcomm’s chips are mostly available in high-end smartphones.

MediTek 5G Chipset Features

With this new powerful chipset, the company is targetting more powerful phones which are currently powered by Qualcomm’s chips. As mentioned above, this will be the company’s first chip to have 5G Modem that helps the phones to connect to the next-generation wireless network.

In terms of 5G networking chips, Qualcomm has already shipped its two variants of 5G networks, so-called sub-6 and millimeter wave bands. That means that phones using its chip will work on any carrier’s 5G networks. While the MediaTek currently handles only sub-6 variants of 5G networks. The company said that it helps to reduce the cost of the chip. However, it will adversely affect the performance of the chip.
