Microsoft plans to ban players from all private Minecraft servers

Microsoft announced a pre-release version of the 1.19.1 update for the Java Edition of Minecraft. The update is expected to be available for all users from June 28. The latest Minecraft update will enable players to report users who abuse the game’s chat system, according to a report by ArsTechnica. The tech giant will be able to ban a Minecraft player from all online platforms, which includes private servers and the ones hosted on Microsoft’s subscription-based Realms plan, only after the moderator review.
What are private servers in Minecraft
The company has allowed Minecraft players to create private servers since the game’s initial days. Private servers allow players to control behaviours and other players in it. As per the report, the Public clearinghouse MinecraftServers.org currently lists more than 31,000 private online Minecraft servers, which is just a fraction of the privately controlled servers available.
How will players know if they are banned
Microsoft has recently updated the “Why Have I been Banned from Minecraft?” help page that mentions that banned players will get a message when they try to “sign into Minecraft on any platform (non-Java Edition)”. The message will read, “Banned players are not allowed to play on servers, join Realms, host or join multiplayer games, or use the marketplace.” Moreover, banned players will also not be allowed to access Minecraft Earth and Xbox players “will no longer have access to their worlds.”
What can get a player banned from Minecraft
The company has mentioned that the ban will restrict players to access private servers, however, a “highly trained moderation staff” will keep an eye on the most grievous violations in public Featured Servers, Realms and Personal worlds. Accounts involved with such severe violations will be banned without their case being reviewed.
Moreover, private server owners will also be able to issue bans on their discretions that will apply to the particular server. Microsoft has confirmed that it will “not intervene in private servers aside from overt violations of the Minecraft EULA and our Terms of Service.”
The help page also suggests that some moderation decisions will only cause temporary suspensions whereas, permanent bans will be reserved for “the most severe violations of our Community Standards.”
These Community Standards cover common moderation topics like “hate speech, sexual content or soliciting improper contact, real-life threats, exposing others’ personal information, posting links of malicious software, impersonating staff, cheating/exploits and general commercial spamming.”
Account banning process in Minecraft
Minecraft’s help page suggests that these reports have to be initiated by a player which will then be reviewed by the moderation team. The report mentions that this process is expected to check the “false-report problems” that are usually related to automated moderation systems.
Moreover, the company has also warned that misusing the chat reporting system by intentionally sending incorrect or irrelevant moderation requests or inciting others to do the same “can lead to repercussions for your account.” Meanwhile, banned players will also be able to file for a case review if they feel the ban is unjust.
Social media’s reaction to Microsoft’s decision
Microsoft’s moderation decision on private game spaces has found criticism from some social media users. A Reddit user has written, “Minecraft is a game played by many adults that desire private spaces where they may play the game in certain ways or communicate in certain ways that are inappropriate for younger audiences,” reports ArsTechnica. Moreover, there have been other negative reactions from Reddit and Twitter users alike.
