Microsoft has just released a blog post and it contains grim news for certain employees in the organisation. The information was shared by the CEO of the company, Satya Nadella. He first spoke about how the world is going through significant changes and the way people spend digitally has changed too.

Microsoft Laying Off 10,000 Employees

The company understands that they need to exercise caution as some parts of the world are already in a recession and some parts are expecting it to arrive in the near future. Therefore, the CEO has thought about three priorities to focus on to make Microsoft even more strong and competitive.

The first priority is to align the cost structure with the revenue and demand. For that reason, they have decided to decrease the overall workforce by 10,000 employees by the end of FY23 Q3. This consists of less than 5% of Microsoft’s overall workforce. Even though they will be letting go of certain people, this does not mean they will stop hiring in “key strategic areas”.

The second priority for the company is to continue their investments in strategic areas to secure their future. The third and final priority of the company is to treat their people with “dignity and respect and act transparently”. He then concluded by saying in 2023, “it’s showtime” for Microsoft, as he thanked peopled that have contributed towards the company to help it reach where it is at the moment.

Microsoft Layoffs Impact 343 and Bethesda

Now that we know about Microsoft’s decision to let go off less than 5% of their employee base, people are wondering which areas will these layoffs impact. According to a report by Bloomberg, it seems that these layoffs will heavily impact Bethesda Game Studios as well as 343 industries. On top of that, the company’s Hololens along with other engineering departments will go through the same situation. A recent Twitter thread by Jason Schreier explains how the cuts are taking place in Bethesda as well as 343.

Firstly, he stated that he does not know the exact numbers, but through several employees he has understood that 343 Industries was “hit hard”. He also spoke about Joseph Staten, who was hired as Halo Infinite’s Creative Head in 2020, has now left the studio and rejoined Xbox Publishing. He has also mentioned that 343’s Halo Infinite team has also been impacted significantly. Moreover, Microsoft has also let go off people from ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda.

Phil Spencer Praises Game Developers

Many gaming organisations are cancelling or delaying their titles due to financial obstacles. We recently learned about Ubisoft cancelling and delaying their major titles in order to reduce the pressure on the company. Through this cancellation era, there are some game developers that are still trying their best to push out games for the fans and Phil Spencer, Microsoft Gaming CEO, appreciates them.

As spotted by Kotaku, Phil Spencer spoke on this topic at the 12th Annual New York Game Awards. He stated that the creators that are able to deliver on “their visions” in a time where the culture is of criticism and cancellation, should be applauded. He also appreciated the players that spare time to “invite, rest and rejuvenate their lives”. Lastly, he appreciated the business leaders that “protect and nurture this collective joy”.
