Broncos coach Kevin Walters has admitted he was “disappointed” by star winger Selwyn Cobbo’s comments criticising his coaching, but said the pair have spoken since the now-infamous podcast appearance and buried the hatchet.
Speaking to 9News at Broncos training this morning, Walters said “even Wayne Bennett had his critics”.
“Certainly it was disappointing from that regard,” he said.

“We spoke about it and had a good chat – I won’t say father-son but along those lines.
“Knowing Selwyn as I do, and as we do here at the club, I thought is was probably a little bit out of line from Selwyn – it’s not normally his character to be like that.
“But he rang me pretty early in the morning, not long after it all surfaced and was very apologetic.”
Cobbo made the comments on the Back of the 135 podcast last October, but they resurfaced over the weekend.
“I reckon he’s a good person,” he said when asked if he thought Walters was a good coach.
“He’s a good person, like a good bloke but I don’t think he’s a good coach. He’s not the best coach but he’s alright.
“I feel like he’s just a good person but I don’t reckon he’s a coach. Even though he experienced footy, been through all the grand finals and all that, but I feel like he’s not a coach.
“But he’s a good person, a good bloke and does a lot for the club. But the way he coaches is a bit weird, I guess. He’s a good person though. He’s an alright coach.”
The comments were made in the weeks following teammate Tyson Gamble also questioned Walters coaching on another podcast.
As a result, the club will now require players to seek approval from officials before appearing on podcasts.
But in a statement released Sunday morning, Cobbo did a complete 180 and described Walters as a “very good coach”.
“(Sunday’s) article on a podcast I did last year has been taken out of context. It was two guys chatting and joking about silly things like the comments about Kev that had been made by Tyson (Gamble),” Cobbo said.
Walters said he and the rest of the club had “learned from” the incident and were now fully focussed on the 2023 season.
“Even the great Wayne Bennett’s got his critics … I’m no different.
“I’m a big believer in what we’re doing here and how we’re going about it. We’ll stay on that path and it’s great Selwyn will be on that path as well.
“We’ve all learned from it – certainly myself and also Selwyn, so we’ll get on with things … and look forward to building a great future here.”
