Old video from Mumbai linked to protest in Kanpur against Nupur Sharma

An 18-second video clip of policemen carrying out a lathi charge is viral. It is being claimed that the police thrashed ‘Jihadi stone pelters’ in Kanpur. The video is being shared in the context of the recent violence in Kanpur where Muslim organisations opposed now-suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s statement against Prophet Muhammad.

Dainik Bhaskar also reported that the video depicts violence in Kanpur.

Twitter handles ‘@jimmyjvyas,’ and ‘@Delli_Ka_Munda’ made the identical claim.

The video is widespread on both Facebook and Twitter.

Fact-check

Alt News conducted a reverse image search of a frame from the video on Yandex and found that the video was uploaded on YouTube on March 28, 2020. The title of the video is ‘Mumbra kausa’. It is to be noted that Mumbra is in Thane, Maharashtra.


YouTube channel Hindustani Reporter had reported about this incident. The part of the viral video in the YouTube video starts after 1 minute and 12 seconds. According to the channel, in Thane’s Kausa Sri Lanka area, a dispute broke out between the factions of two Nationalist Congress Party corporators, Raju and Rihan. This took place on March 27, 2020, around 11:30 pm. The police had lathi-charged to control the situation.

Patrika fact-checked this video on April 9, 2020. At the time, the video was being shared with the claim that it is from Indore. Mumbra police had informed that this video is from the Kausa Sri Lanka area in Mumbra. After a dispute between the two factions, the police conducted a lathi charge to remove the crowd.
