Phil Foden out of England vs Ukraine as Man City star forced to undergo operation | Football | Sport
It is another piece of bad luck for the star. Foden came on in the second half of England’s win over Italy, only to be taken off again just minutes later as Southgate reshuffled his team in the aftermath of Shaw’s red card.
“He (Foden) came up to me and said, ‘I know, I get it’ – he knew exactly what we needed to do,” Southgate said after goals from Declan Rice and Harry Kane helped 10-man England beat Italy.
“You obviously don’t want to do that but we needed to get the full-back on and we felt the change of the shape with them having to play around us but with enough bodies to deal with crosses, but with wing-backs to stop those crosses was the right way to get around that.”
