With a minimalistic round design, a tactile rotating crown, Wear OS 3.1, Fitbit integration, and even Google Home support, the Pixel Watch sounds like a device that will deserve consideration if you are in the market for a new smartwatch this fall.Although the Pixel Watch is not yet released, there is constantly new information coming out, and you can bet that we will continue updating this article to keep you up-to-date with the latest rumors about the first-ever Google smartwatch.

Pixel Watch release date

We expect Google to release the Pixel Watch soon after its hardware event in October 2022. Our guess is based on the company’s habit of hosting its hardware events in early or mid-October. Every year around that time, Google unveils a new Pixel phone and new hardware, such as the Tensor chip last year. Given that both the Pixel 7 and the Pixel Watch are scheduled for a fall release, we feel it’s realistic to expect Google’s first smartwatch to be released around the beginning or in the middle of this month.

Pixel Watch price

We expect the Pixel Watch’s price to be between $300 and $400. In April, leaker Yogesh Brar tweeted that the Pixel Watch could be priced in this range. There is also a possibility for Google to give its watch a starting price around that of the Galaxy Watch 4, which starts at $249. So a price tag between $250 and $300 could also be possible. Keep in mind that there is no official word from Google about how much the Pixel Watch will cost and these are all rumors and speculations. But when we find out how much Big G’s first smartwatch will hurt your budget, we will let you know.

Pixel Watch storage

The Pixel Watch is rumored to come with 32GB of internal storage, which will make it the Wear OS watch with the most storage space on the market. Currently, the king in that department is the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, with its 16GB. Furthermore, the Pixel Watch’s 32GB storage space is identical to that of the Apple Watch Series 7, implying that Google’s smartwatch will be a worthy competitor to both premium wearables, at least in terms of storage space.

Pixel Watch design

What does the Pixel Watch look like? Google took the safe bet and went with a classic round form factor for its first smartwatch. From the images shared by Google and those taken of a prototype found at a restaurant, we see that the Pixel Watch has a round face surrounded by a bezel, which looks like it curves over the edges, giving the watch a dome-like design.

After the leaked Pixel Watch was measured, it was discovered that it is 40mm wide, 14mm thick, and weighs 36g. The screen without the bezel is said to be 30mm. Google’s first-ever watch has two physical buttons and a tactile rotating crown between them on its right side to help you navigate through the menus. It is constructed of recycled stainless steel and will come with easily detachable custom bands.

According to rumors, the Pixel Watch will come in three colors:

Pixel Watch battery

Rumors say the Pixel Watch will have a 300mAh battery. It will be charged wirelessly by a magnetic puck, but the interesting part is that the other end of the cable could be USB-C rather than USB-A, like with the Galaxy Watch 4. It is not known if Google’s watch will support Qi wireless charging. According to the individual who discovered the prototype mentioned above, chargers detected the Pixel Watch but were unable to charge it.According to rumors, the Pixel Watch will be able to last up to a day on a single charge — which is disappointing, we know. However, there is no information on the test settings or if Google used features like Always On Display or sleep tracking during the testing. We’re hoping that these features were enabled during the trials and that this is why the watch’s battery life was so poor.

The Pixel Watch’s charging speed is said to be similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, which takes around 110 minutes to fully charge. Although it’s disappointing, most smartwatches take between 1 and 2 hours to charge, so it’s not great, but it’s not that bad either. Yes, there are watches out there that charge faster than 110 minutes. For example, the Apple Watch Series 7 takes around 75 minutes to top up. But if you charge your watch at night, the charging speed shouldn’t be a problem for you.

However, we really hoped that Google would have learned from the mistakes of its competitors, but it seems that it didn’t. Both the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Apple Watch Series 7 last only one day on a single charge. This is a big drawback on otherwise great devices, and it looks like it will be a disadvantage for the Pixel Watch as well.

Of course, these are just rumors, and Google hasn’t released any official information on battery life or how long it would take to charge the Pixel Watch. We’ll let you know as soon as the official data is available.

Pixel Watch features and software

According to rumors, the Pixel Watch will come with Samsung’s Exynos 9110, which is the chip that powers the Galaxy Watches from the first one made back in 2018 all the way to the Galaxy Watch 3. And to compensate for the power differences — let’s face it, a five-year-old chip is no match for the competition — Google could add a mysterious “co-processor” under the hood of the Pixel Watch. Will it be enough to compete with the Galaxy Watch 4 and Apple Watch Series 7? We have to test it first, but it sure sounds interesting.
The Pixel Watch is also rumored to have between 1.5GB and 2GB of RAM. We don’t have an exact number yet, but the Pixel Watch is expected to “slightly surpass” the Galaxy Watch 4, which has 1.5GB of RAM and is currently the smartwatch with the most RAM capacity on the market among all Wear OS smartwatches.

Rumor has it that Google’s Pixel Watch will be running Wear OS 3.1, which could be another reason to consider buying the smartwatch. Wear OS 3 is the latest version of the wearable operating system and gives users better navigation, faster performance, and longer battery life than the previous versions of Wear OS.

Furthermore, Google stated that its smartwatch will have an improved Wear OS UI to make it easier to use, have Google Assistant support, and will enable users to “get directions on the go” with Google Maps without their phones.

The Pixel Watch will also support Google Wallet and Google Home, which means you’ll be able to make payments and control your smart home directly from your wrist.

Fitness enthusiasts will also be happy to learn that the Pixel Watch will have Fitbit integration, giving them access to Fitbit’s industry-leading fitness tracking.

With the Pixel Watch, users will be able to track all the standard stuff like their heart rate, their sleep, and their blood oxygen level. They will also be able to see their active zone minutes during a workout. And according to rumors, Google’s watch will use the same sensors found in the Fitbit Luxe and Charge 5, so expect an ECG feature as well.

Currently, there is information for three Pixel Watch models: the GQF4C, which only has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and the GBZ4S and GWT9R, which have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and LTE support. The difference between the last two is only the LTE bands they support. But don’t expect to see all three lined up in one place. Google will probably offer different models in different parts of the world. But, you will probably be able to choose between an LTE or a Wi-Fi-only model.

Should I wait for the Pixel Watch?

  • You should wait for the Pixel Watch if you want to try Big G’s first-ever smartwatch, which has the potential to be the best of the Fitbit and Wear OS worlds. Google’s first smartwatch will run Wear OS 3 and use Fitbit’s fitness tracking technology. It will also have better integration with the Google ecosystem. Rumors suggest that the Pixel Watch will have more RAM and storage capacity than the current king of the Wear OS world, the Galaxy Watch 4, so if you are an Android user and can wait a few more months to buy a new smartwatch, you should probably wait and see if the rumors are true.
  • You should not wait for the Pixel Watch if you are an iPhone user. Google’s smartwatch won’t be compatible with Apple devices. Also, let’s not forget that this will be the first generation of the Pixel Watch, so there could be some issues with it.

Furthermore, there are amazing smartwatches on the market that you can get right now without waiting for months. For example, you can currently buy a Galaxy Watch 4. Samsung’s latest flagship smartwatch comes with all the goodies Wear OS 3 has, plus all the fitness tracking features you need and even a BIA sensor, which can measure your muscle-fat percentage.

But if you prefer Fitbit’s technology over Samsung’s, and you don’t use many apps on your watch, you can buy a Fitbit smartwatch today. The Fitbit Sense smartwatch is a viable alternative to the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Pixel Watch, and it also works with Apple devices. With Sense, you get all the essential fitness tracking features, including a body temperature sensor. Of course, you will miss the body composition function of the Galaxy Watch 4, but nevertheless, Sense is worth considering.
