Premier League | Everton makes formal complaint over ‘incompetent’ officiating

Everton is demanding an apology from the Premier League after a controversial handball decision in the side’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Saturday’s match was overshadowed by a decision from referee Paul Tierney not to award a penalty kick after Rodri appeared to handle the ball.

The video assistant, Chris Kavanagh, didn’t overturn the decision on the basis that he felt there was no obvious error.

“We’ve lost a point because of a professional who cannot do his job right. It is so incompetent to get it wrong,” fumed Everton boss Frank Lampard.

Speaking after the match, Lampard said his three-year-old daughter could have seen it was a penalty.

“It’s VAR’s call, that’s Chris Kavanagh,” he said.

“The referee couldn’t see it on the pitch, he was on the other side, that’s fine.

“Incompetence at best, at worst who knows? I’ll wait for the statement or apology they do when things are wrong but it will mean nothing.”

Everton boss Denise Barrrett-Baxendale has written to the Premier League’s chief executive, Richard Masters, and chief football officer Tony Scholes seeking answers to the debacle.

Everton sits in 17th spot on the ladder after the loss, just one point above the relegation zone, having lost six of their seven Premier League matches played since Christmas.
