Qualcomm’s flagship chip for Android smartphones is here. The chipmaker has announced the successor to its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 at its Snapdragon Summit 2022 which will power flagship devices likely to arrive in 2023. The latest chip, as expected is named — Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform — and brings several technological improvements such as performance boost, better graphics and more, over its predecessor. The company says, “The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform will define a new standard for connected computing, intelligently engineered with groundbreaking AI across the board to enable extraordinary experiences.”
The company has confirmed that the latest mobile platform will be adopted by global OEMs and brands including Asus Republic of Gamers, Honor, iQoo, Motorola, Nubia, OnePlus, Oppo, Redmagic, Redmi, Sharp, Sony, Vivo, Xiaomi, XINGJI/MEIZU and ZTE. The company has also confirmed that the first device powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will arrive by the end of the year. Here’s everything you need to know about Qualcomm’s most-powerful mobile chip:
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 comes with improved AI and camera technologySnapdragon 8 Gen 2 comes with Snapdragon Smart feature and it includes the company’s most advanced AI Engine. According to the company, the 8 Gen 2 processor brings AI integration across the system. The AI Engine is powered by Qualcomm Hexagon processor that claims to offer faster and natural language processing with multi-language translation and AI-based camera features. The Hexagon processor also comes with a new updated architecture, including micro tile inference and a bigger tensor accelerator that claims up to 4.35x increased AI performance. This is also the first Snapdragon mobile platform to support INT4—an AI precision format—with 60% performance/watt improvement for sustained AI inferencing.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC also comes with Snapdragon Sight which brings improved camera performance and processing. As per the company, this is the first chipset to offer Cognitive ISP which automatically enhances photos and videos in real-time with semantic segmentation using AI neural network to make the camera contextually aware of faces, facial features, hair, clothes, skies and more – and optimise them individually so every detail receives customised professional image tuning.
The 8 Gen 2 chip also supports new image sensors such as Sony’s newly developed quad digital overlap HDR technology, Samsung’s ISOCELL HP3, the first 200MP sensor and more. This is also the first Snapdragon to include an AV1 codec with support for video playback up to 8K HDR at 60 frames per second.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2: Performance, connectivity and more
Qualcomm has also included the Snapdragon Elite Gaming technology which brings features like real-time hardware accelerated ray tracing, new Adreno GPU which claims up to 25% better gaming performance and Kryo CPU with up to 40% better power efficiency than its predecessor. Additionally, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is also the world’s first mobile platform to support Unreal Engine 5 Metahumus Framework.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 comes with Snapdragon X70 5G Modem-RF System with Qualcomm 5G AI Processor. This is also the first Snapdragon platform to support 5G+5G/4G Dual-SIM Dual-Active technology. The chip also comes with Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 connectivity system, Wi-Fi 7 and dual Bluetooth connectivity.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 also supports Snapdragon Sound technology for better audio and calling experience. The chip also features spatial audio support with dynamic head-tracking for an improved surround sound experience and also supports 48KHz lossless music streaming.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform is safeguarded with Snapdragon Secure that offers cryptography, key management, attestation, and more.
