Retro-Style RPG Sea of Stars Delayed Until 2023

Retro-style RPG Sea of Stars has been delayed until 2023 according to a statement shared by developers Sabotage.

Sabotage is the team behind the 2018 action platformer The Messenger. The mission statement of the studio is to bring its own style to the genres the developers played as kids. Sabotage blends modern game design with a retro aesthetic and that’s exactly what they’re hoping to achieve once more with their latest project Sea of Stars which is actually a prequel to The Messenger despite being completely different genres.

Sea of Stars was originally slated for a 2022 release but Sabotage announced via Tweet that they were pushing the release back until sometime in 2023:

“As we are closing in on a very big milestone the road to launch becomes clearer, and we find ourselves here with a large body of text and our logos at the bottom. Keeping in mind our two main priorities – quality of life for our team and quality of the finished game – we can now confirm that Sea of Stars will be released in 2023.”

The statement continued: “We understand waiting is a big ask, and want to sincerely thank our community for the overwhelming support and positive vibes. In the meantime, we are looking at options to get a playable slice out to everyone this year.”

The game was originally announced at Summer Game Fest in 2020, and then a Switch port was confirmed in December 2021. Sea of Stars has an art style which really nails the modern meets classic goal of the game, as you can see in the trailer below:

Yasunori Mitsuda, who composed music for one of Sea of Stars’ inspirations Chrono Trigger, will be acting as a guest composer on the title.

Sea of Stars is planned to release in 2023 on PC and Nintendo Switch.
