MSE continued: “Where there’s a dispute with your bank about reimbursement – perhaps you disagree with its decision, or you’re unhappy with the way it’s handled your complaint – you’ll normally be able to escalate your case to the free Financial Ombudsman.

“Interestingly, between July and September 2021, the ombudsman upheld 60 percent of customer-versus-bank scam complaints in the customer’s favour.”

Meanwhile, people are being encouraged to dial 159 if they receive a suspicious call from someone claiming to be from the bank or asking you to do a bank transfer.

By calling 159, the hotline will connect you to the bank, where they can confirm whether the call was genuine or not.
