Samsung today announced a newly developed unbreakable smartphone flexible panel. The panel which has been certified by UL (Underwriters Laboratories), an official testing company for OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor could be used in automobiles,  mobile military devices, portable game consoles and tablet PCs for e-learning apart from its use in Smartphones.

“The fortified plastic window is especially suitable for portable electronic devices not only because of its unbreakable characteristics but also because of its lightweight, transmissivity, and hardness, which are all very similar to glass,” said Hojung Kim, general manager of the Communication Team, Samsung Display Company.

In the tests, no signs of damage emerged when the drop test was conducted from a height of 1.2 meters for successive 26 times and apart from the drop test temperature tests as high as 71 degree Celsius to as low as -32 degree Celsius were also conducted but still the panel continued to function smoothly.

Apart from the test by OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor Samsung conducted its own test by dropping it from a height of 1.8 meters (around 6 feet) and surprisingly the panel continued to function properly.

According to Samsung Newsroom, the flexible OLED panel is developed with an unbreakable substrate and an overlay window securely adhered to it. Current-generation flexible display products attach a glass-covered window to their display that often breaks when severely impacted.
