Back in the 1980s, Sandy Campbell was one of rugby league’s glamour boys – a try-scoring winger adored by fans.
Campbell featured in a memorable front page of Rugby League Week at the height of his fame with a studio photo of him in his dancing gear.
But fast forward to 2022 and Campbell has had a sad fall from grace – he is homeless, wandering the streets in the daytime with all his worldly goods in a shopping trolley and sleeping at night under Coolangatta surf club on the Gold Coast.

To make matters worse, Campbell, now 56, found out a month ago that he has lung cancer and is having weekly chemotherapy.
The ex-Bulldogs, Roosters and South Sydney star hasn’t been forgotten by the game.
His former teammates are rallying around him and Family of League (formerly Men of League) is also looking to help out.
“It’s been sad – he was fine until a year or so ago when things fell apart,” former teammate Kurt Landers told Wide World of Sports.
“I am determined to help him out and so have plenty of other guys who played with and against him.
“I’m going up to the Gold Coast soon to check in on him and we are looking to set up a GoFundMe page to help him.
“Hopefully the fans who he gave a lot of joy to can pitch in.
“I’ve spoken to Family of League and they have also promised to do something.”
