seatbelt issue: Maruti Suzuki recalls over 5,000 vehicles to fix likely seatbelt issue

Maruti Suzuki has recalled 5,002 super carry vehicles produced between May 4, 2022 and July 30, 2022 to fix a possible defect with seat belt.

“The recall is being undertaken for inspection and torquing of a bolt attached to seat belt buckle bracket of co-driver seat. It is suspected that there is a possible defect in bolt torquing, which in a rare case, may loosen in the long run,” the company said in an exchange filing.

This comes at a time when India is stepping up regulatory measures to ensure passengers, even on rear seats, wear seat belts. The sudden safety push was triggered after the recent death of former Tata Sons chairperson Cyrus Mistry in a tragic car accident earlier this month. As per reports, Mistry was seated in the rear seats and was not wearing a seat belt.

Maruti said the affected vehicle owners will be receiving communication from Maruti Suzuki authorized

workshops for inspection and repair that will be free of cost.
