Shane Van Gisbergen injured in mountain biking accident, V8 Supercars news


Shane Van Gisbergen has undergone successful surgery after injuring his collarbone in a mountain biking accident.

The championship favourite had a plate inserted during what was deemed a “routine” procedure in Brisbane and he is expected to fully recover.

News of the 31-year-old’s accident was confirmed in a statement by his Red Bull Ampol Racing team.

Van Gisbergen has alraedy been ruled out of competing in the opening round of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia Powered by AWS next weekend at Phillip Island as a result of his injury.

“While medically he would likely be able to do so, the decision has been made to wait until the Sandown SuperSprint in two weeks to return to the wheel to allow more time for a smooth recovery,” the Red Bull statement read.

“Jamie Whincup will take his seat alongside His Highness Prince Jefri Ibrahim in the no. 888 AMG GT3 Evo.”

Van Gisbergen took out the opening round of the V8 Supercars championship in Bathurst last week.
