With the cost of living increasing and inflation at a high of 10.1 percent, Britons are keen to save money wherever they can. However, some customers are mortified at the latest money saving suggestion.
Toilet paper is a staple item and households tend to get through a lot of it.
At the UK’s most popular supermarket, Tesco, stocks its Andrex Toilet Tissue Gentle Clean 24 Roll for £11.25. This works out at around 47p per roll.
But while this cost seems essential for most, there are some who save their pennies by investing in reusable toilet paper.
Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK outlined how such a product is used.

The website read: “Reusable toilet paper is actually based on a similar concept to cloth nappies.
“However, instead of paper, people use strips or squares of cloth.
“Most people craft reusable toilet paper from single-ply 100 percent cotton flannel.”
The site called it “eco-friendly and cost-effective”.

What’s more, because cotton is hypoallergenic, it is suitable for all skin types.
Once used, reusable toilet paper can be popped in the washing with the rest of your laundry, or alternatively, washed by hand.
Despite the fact this frugal method undoubtably cuts cost, many Britons believe it’s just not worth it.
A Facebook post by Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK about the money saving trend has amassed a huge 886 reactions, including ‘Haha’ and ‘Wow’.

Jodie Harvey pointed out another issue: “Counterproductive… waste water washing these. Electricity costs running the washing machine or gas costs using hot water if hand washing. I’m all for saving the planet but it’s a no from me.”
Others were a little more accepting of the money saving method.
Emma Evers stated: “Wow some people are so ignorant to facts. It might not be for everyone but its a great option for those wanting to reduce their environmental impact and save themselves cost in the long term. With an effective wash routine we can use washable anything really.
“We use cloth nappies, wipes and kitchen rolls, all come out of our wash smelling fresh and with no stains. No need to pay out for nappies, baby wipes, toilet rolls or kitchen rolls all the time which all add up on a weekly shop. No bacterial problems or infections would you believe it.”
Nicola Charlton added: “I cut up an old towelling dressing gown into squares. I only use them for when I have a wee then put it in a bucket of Zoflora. The bucket has a lid on. I wash the squares every few days. There is no smell at all and has saved me a fortune on not buying so much loo roll.”
