Sony and Honda unveil new Afeela EV at CES 2023
Going into CES 2023, the big revelation from Sony revolved around its recent attempts at breaking into the EV market with Sony Honda Mobility Inc. At CES 2022, the company showcased a concept car titled “Vision-S 02”, which sowed the seeds for the company’s push into the automotive industry.
During CES 2023, Sony Honda Mobility finally revealed the company’s first car in the prototype EV, Afeela. The first brand of the joint venture between Sony and Honda will begin production soon, with the EV set to launch in North America in Spring 2026. Pre-orders for the EV based on the prototype will begin in the first half of 2025.
As mentioned during the press conference in Las Vegas, the company aims to offer value to customers with three major elements – Autonomy, Augmentation, and Affinity.
Talking about the prototype itself, the EV features “45 cameras and sensors inside and outside the vehicle,” which aids in the company’s efforts to provide autonomy to users. On the exterior, its standout feature is a Media Bar, which can display information such as battery and other important aspects of the vehicle. As Sony Honda Mobility said, it “allows intelligent mobility to express itself to surrounding people using light, enabling interactive communication between mobility and people.”

Sony Honda Mobility has also teased the idea of the ultimate entertainment suite for users with the Afeela brand. This includes a fully integrated PS5, which can be used for both gaming and experiencing other entertainment elements. Plus, the company has also struck a partnership with Epic Games to introduce Unreal Engine tools. The company revealed that the collaboration will help Sony Honda Mobility in creating “new value in mobility services and entertainment.”
