Sophie, Countess of Wessex was seen arriving at St Giles’ Cathedral, in Edinburgh, for Queen Elizabeth’s service with Camilla, Queen Consort.

Camilla and Sophie followed the procession of Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin in a car before arriving at St Giles’ Cathedral.

In the car, the Countess of Wessex looked visibly affected and during the service, she tearfully stood alongside other members of the Royal Family.

Sophie sat next to her husband, Prince Edward, Princess Anne and Prince Andrew, during the service.

Body language expert Judi James analysed how the members of the Royal Family dealt with the emotional event, and although “they all walked in step the length of the Royal Mile during the procession and all in military mode with no communication between them,” some differences could be spotted during the service.

Judi explained that the Queen Consort’s body language suggested a great level of anxiety during the service.

The expert said: “During the service, Camilla did seem to wait anxiously on the steps of the church, fiddling with her bag and touching the wide brim of her hat in a ritual that looked like anxiety.”

Sophie, on the other side, could be seen close to tears and “was the one showing the strongest emotion here, albeit suppressed,” Judi said.

The body language expert claimed her facial expression “suggested a sense of exhaustion caused by grief”.

A source explained: “Sophie cherishes her relationship with the Queen and not only appreciates her guidance and wisdom throughout her own life, she is very protective of her.

“Their bond is very like a mother and daughter and the feeling of love and respect is quite mutual. It is very special,” they told the Telegraph.

Sophie and Edward married in 1999 meaning the Countess of Wessex and Queen Elizabeth shared a bond for over 23 years.

Former aides recently described the Queen’s relationship with Sophie as “like mother and daughter”.

It is believed Sophie and Queen Elizabeth also shared several common interests such as their love of horses, military history and the countryside.

Sources also claimed the Queen’s “favourite” grandchild was Lady Louise Windsor, Prince Edward and Sophie’s first child.

The Earl and Countess of Wessex have two children together: Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.
