TL;DR

  • The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the Galaxy S23 series could be slightly different.
  • Rumors suggest it will be overclocked and feature enhancements specific to Samsung phones.
  • The branding could be “Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy.”

Over the past year, rumors have proliferated that Samsung could launch one version of the Galaxy S23 series. Unlike previous years, there might not be an Exynos-powered model, resulting in every market getting the Snapdragon model.

Now, a new leak (via 9to5Google) gives more credence to this rumor. According to the leak, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the Galaxy S23 series could be a slightly tweaked model. For example, it could be overclocked from the usual 3.2GHz to a slightly faster 3.36GHz. It could also feature subtle tweaks that specifically cater to Samsung phones.

The rumor also suggests the branding used for this specialized processor version could be “Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy.” Theoretically, this would be the wording Samsung would use when promoting the product to differentiate it from other phones with the normal Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 on board.

If Samsung is going so far as to co-brand the processor with Qualcomm, it would be very strange for it also to release an Exynos-based version of the Galaxy S23 series. This is the strongest evidence yet that all areas could get the Snapdragon model this year. If this pans out, it will be the first time we’ve seen this much uniformity in the Galaxy S series.

Regardless, it seems likely that those who do get the Snapdragon model will get a processor specifically catered for their phone. We’ll need to wait and see how much of a difference this does or does not make with normal usage of the phone.
