The Frenchman – whose first collection of exaggerated hourglass designs arrived in 1973 – died from undisclosed natural causes on Sunday aged 73.

His famous fans included Jerry Hall, Madonna, Grace Jones, David Bowie, Lady Gaga, Sharon Stone and Daryl Hannah. Mugler’s creations were also chosen by Hollywood, notably a black gown worn by Demi Moore in Indecent Proposal. It was dubbed “the most famous dress of the 1990s”.

A cohort of supermodels, including Linda Evangelista and Eva Herzigova, wore Mugler in George Michael’s Too Funky music video in 1992. The same year the designer, a former ballet dancer and acrobat, launched the perfume Angel, followed 13 years later by Alien.

Yesterday Beyonce paid tribute to Mugler, who created the costumes for her tour in 2009, by posting a black and white picture him on her website. Diana Ross shared a snap of herself with him in 1990, writing: “I will miss you Thierry Mugler, this was a wonderful time in our lives.” Kylie Minogue said: “A true visionary. Thank you for your art Manfred.”

Singer Rita Ora added: “Thank you for all the joy you brought us through your creations.”
