Los Angeles, CA – Marvel Studios’ Super Bowl trailer for Thunderbolts has given fans their first real glimpse at Sentry, a character whose destructive potential could make him the MCU’s most dangerous force yet. The long-awaited teaser showcases an intense, espionage-heavy tone that sets the stage for an anti-heroic mission that spirals out of control.
IGN reported that the film will follow a government-assembled team made up of ex-villains and anti-heroes, including Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, U.S. Agent, Ghost, and Taskmaster, who are sent to neutralize an out-of-control superpowered threat. That threat? Sentry, played by Lewis Pullman, who appears as a tormented powerhouse struggling with his unstable mind and god-like abilities.
Entertainment Weekly described Sentry as “an existential threat unlike anything the MCU has faced”, with the trailer showing his devastating power—including shockwave-inducing punches, super-speed takedowns, and glimpses of his inner turmoil. His abilities make him far deadlier than past foes like Thanos or Kang, especially if his darker alter-ego, The Void, comes into play.
The Hollywood Reporter emphasized how Marvel is doubling down on gritty, espionage-driven storytelling, with the film carrying shades of The Suicide Squad and The Winter Soldier. Unlike previous Marvel team-ups, this group doesn’t have the unity of the Avengers, leading to intense internal conflicts as they attempt to control an uncontrollable force.
With Thunderbolts arriving on July 25, 2025, speculation is growing that the film could set up an even larger storyline for the MCU, with Sentry potentially becoming a recurring presence in future films. As Marvel leans into darker, character-driven narratives, Thunderbolts might just be the shake-up the MCU needs to reinvigorate its fanbase.
