The Trinamool Congress leadership in West Bengal has criticised the Centre for what it claims is the government’s failure to protect Kashmiri pandits, and raised concern over the safety and security of the people living in the valley.

“How many pandits have been murdered and why are they protesting in front of BJP office or on the roads?” TMC’s national spokesperson Sukhendu Sekhar Roy said on Friday. “Those who revoked Article 370 and claimed that absolute peace will prevail in the valley, and all the pandits will be rehabilitated in Kashmir again, now must answer the questions–where is the safety and security in Kashmir? Why are the pandits or the people who want to be in the mainstream, not safe there?”

The situation is likely to affect tourism and people will prefer to choose alternative destinations for travel, Debjit Dutta, chapter chairman at Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), said.

Roy also criticised the Enforcement Directorate’s call to Sonia Gandhi and parliamentarian Rahul Gandhi over the National Herald case, terming it a deliberate attempt to attack the opposition parties in the country. He said it a part of the BJP’s game plan to build “an opposition-mukt Bharat”.

Roy claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi attempted “Congress-mukt Bharat” from 2014 and then it turned out to be “Opposition mukt Bharat”.

TMC also demanded a probe into alleged ‘Covid-related corruption’ in Assam involving the family of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was then the state’s health minister.

The Opposition parties in Assam have demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into allegations of “Covid-related corruption” involving a firm which had links with Sarma’s family.

Activist-turned-MLA Akhil Gogoi’s party, the Raijor Dal, had claimed that a firm, allegedly owned by a member of the chief minister’s family, was awarded an “urgent” order for the supply of 5,000 PPE kits in March 2020.
