Trevor Sinclair causes outrage with ‘disgusting’ tweet following the Queen’s death | Football | Sport

Former England winger Trevor Sinclair sparked plenty of outrage on social media with a controversial tweet after the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday. The nation’s longest-reigning monarch died at her Balmoral residence in Scotland while surrounded by close members of the royal family, with Buckingham Palace confirming the news by releasing an official statement later on Thursday evening.

Plenty of tributes have already poured in from across the sporting world, with many of football’s leading figures having paid their respects on social media in the hours since the Queen’s death was announced. Sinclair managed to spark fury with his own tweet, though, in which he claimed that racism was ‘allowed to thrive’ during the Queen’s 70-year reign.

He wrote: “Racism was outlawed in England in the 60s & it’s been allowed to thrive so why should black & brown mourn!”

Sinclair’s view was quickly met with a huge amount of backlash as a large number of people criticised the former Manchester City and West Ham United forward, who posted his tweet just hours after the death of the Queen.

@JulieHaslam did not mince her words in her reply to Sinclair’s original tweet, saying: “Unbelievable. Disgusting. Unfollowed.”

Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan was also left shocked as he replied: “Trev, I’m really not sure that is an appropriate thought , let alone tweet. The country has lost a very significant person and respect and value should be the overriding sentiments not division!”

Jordan’s comments were echoed by @Ian_Tex_Greer, who added: “State of this tweet. You can think of what you want of the monarchy, and choose not to mourn, it’s your choice, but why feel the need to tweet about it?”

@Cal_lung also challenged Sinclair’s view by replying: “As a man of colour Trev you’re completely out of order here. I in fact believe racism works both ways.

“As for this comment, this lady served this country in a manner that will be never seen again. Slavery was aborted in her reign… remember the facts.”

@RickyMartin247 was another to have been left furious by Sinclair’s controversial post, adding: “Absolute embarrassment of a tweet. Hold your head in shame and while you’re at it, hand back your caps for England for saying that. Clearly looking for click bait at a time of national pain.”

A number of other repliers called for Sinclair to be sacked from his role as a pundit on talkSPORT, while some pointed out the fact that he appeared to have sympathy for the Queen in 2020 when he tweeted that she was ‘genuine in humility’ and ‘still inspired’.

talkSPORT later revealed that they were investigating the matter in a tweet which read: “We have been trying to make contact with Trevor Sinclair following opinions expressed on his Twitter account. talkSPORT does not support those views expressed and is investigating the matter.”
