Two-time Olympic champion David Rudisha survives plane crash after engine ‘went quiet’ | Other | Sport
David Rudisha, who the 800 metres at the London and Rio Olympic Games, has survived a plane crash. The 33-year-old was on board the aircraft when it crash-landed in Kenya on Saturday and says it “went quiet,” before hitting the ground.
“All was well close to seven or eight minutes into the flight when the engine of the plane suddenly went quiet,” he explained to the Daily Nation in the aftermath of the crash.
“[The pilot] saw some clear space where he tried to land the plane, but one of its wings hit a tree as the plane started to spin before landing on the rocky field. The pilot did an incredible job to keep the plane afloat and stable for long.
“We thank God we all came out alive with some soft tissue injuries that were treated before all were discharged save for one. It was a scary episode where you hold your heart in your hand as you pray to God. The pilot did an incredible job to keep the plane afloat and stable for long.”
According to the BBC, the plane was carrying six people when it came down in Kajiado county in south-east Kenya. The party were returning from the annual Maasai Olympics at Kimana Wildlife Sanctuary.
Kenya Masters Athletics chairman Stephen Ole Marai, who was also on board, was transferred to Nairobi West Hospital for specialised treatment after injuring his ribs in the crash. And the other people on the plane also received medical attention at the hospital before later being discharged.
