Eintracht Frankfurt has won its first European trophy since 1980, defeating Rangers in a penalty shootout in the final of the UEFA Europa League.

After the match finished level at 1-1, Frankfurt prevailed 5-4 in the shootout.

Rangers will rue a missed opportunity in the final moments of extra time, when Frankfurt keeper Kevin Trapp came up with a remarkable save to stop a shot from Ryan Kent.

“I feel terribly sorry for them (Rangers),” former Socceroo Mark Bosnich said on Stan Sport.

“They’ll look back with a lot of regret, Ryan Kent had that chance that Kevin Trapp saved, miraculously.”

The penalty shootout was decided by one kick, with Trapp again the hero, saving Aaron Ramsey’s shot.

On the winning side was Socceroo Ajdin Hrustic who became the first Australian since Harry Kewell in 2005 to win a major European final.

Kewell was famously injured and forced from the field after starting that game, before Liverpool stormed back from 3-0 down to defeat AC Milan in arguably the greatest Champions League finals in history.

Hrustic will have fonder memories of this final, nailing his penalty in the shootout to play a key part in the result.

“I think it’s the greatest drama in world sport, and it’s one of the most pressure filled situations,” Craig Foster said on Stan Sport.

“Of course you have heroes and villains, but it was a very high-quality shootout. Even Aaron Ramsey was saved, but he got it on target.”
