The couple would marry in France the following year, without any members of the Royal Family present, and they were given the titles of Duke and Duchess of Windsor – although Wallis was never given the style of Her Royal Highness.
As a symbol of his love, Edward had given Wallis a staggeringly large engagement ring fitting for their “dramatic” love story.
Jeremy Hinds, director at jewellery experts F Hinds, said: “This dramatic love story can only have a dramatic ring to match – Edward chose a 19.77-carat emerald gemstone surrounded by a halo of single diamonds set into yellow gold.
“The band was made personal when Edward had the words ‘we are ours now’ engraved on the band.”
